I’ve spent 4+ years in all three of America’s “power cities”—San Francisco, New York, and Los Angeles. If you're trying to figure out where to live to actually get ahead, here’s the only breakdown you need.
🧠 San Francisco: For Builders
There is truly no better place to build a company. Not just because everyone is obsessed with product and capital — but because there’s literally nothing else to do. If you’re choosing to live in SF, it’s probably not for the nightlife or food scene. It’s because you care more about focus than fun.
That means the only other people who willingly live here are…other founders. People who are equally obsessed with building. The founder culture here is so contagious, it’s hard not to become more ambitious just by osmosis. You’ll learn entrepreneurship fast because you’re surrounded by the best. The default is building, not brunch.
🤝 New York City: For Connectors
If your career depends on relationships — think sales, finance, partnerships — you need to be in NYC. No other city makes it this easy to meet people. Everyone’s looking for an excuse to get outside: to walk, to eat, to grab a coffee in a cute cafe or hit a rooftop after work. That means getting a “yes” to a meeting is way easier.
Plus, because of the sheer density, every major conference, dinner, or pop-up will happen here first. It's the only city where something industry-relevant is happening every single day. If you’re not here, someone else is — and they’ll be the one to land the deal, the client, or the investor first.
💅 Los Angeles: For Influence
LA is the land of exclusivity—mansion parties, invite-only dinners, dream collabs. It’s all about social capital, and it compounds fast.
But here's the catch: LA is the hardest place to build early momentum. Everything is far apart, there’s no real public transit, and plans flake constantly. Getting anywhere is a headache. So unless you're already plugged into the right circles, it can feel impossible to get started.
